Our Safety Protocols on Komodo Tour

Our Safety Protocols on Komodo Tour: Trekking with Dragons & Sailing the Sea.
Komodo Island offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to walk among prehistoric dragons, explore untouched beaches, and snorkel in crystal-clear waters. But for many travelers, one important question comes to mind:
“Is it safe to visit Komodo Island?”

At MMB Komodo Tour, safety is not an option — it’s a commitment. Whether you’re trekking on land or sailing at sea, we’ve developed strict safety protocols to ensure your adventure is exciting, worry-free, and fully protected.

Here’s how we keep you safe — from dragon encounters to boat journeys and beyond.

1. Trekking Safety: Walking with Komodo Dragons

Komodo dragons are powerful wild animals. But with proper planning and experienced rangers, you can observe them safely in their natural habitat.

Here’s what we do to protect you during every trek:

Always Accompanied by Certified Rangers
All treks on Komodo and Rinca islands are led by official park rangers trained in safety and dragon behavior.

Rangers carry a wooden stick (forked staff) to defend if needed.

Mandatory Safety Briefing
Before every trek, you’ll get a short safety orientation covering:

  • Minimum distance from dragons
  • Group behavior
  • Do’s and don’ts on the trail

Safe Trekking Routes
We only use designated trekking paths, chosen based on weather, dragon activity, and guest fitness level.

Family- or senior-friendly options are available.

Note!!:

  • Women on their menstrual cycle must inform the ranger due to dragons’ acute sense of smell.
  • Running, feeding, or approaching dragons is strictly prohibited.

2. Boat Safety: Sailing through Komodo National Park

Komodo is an island destination — which means you’ll spend a lot of time on the water. Our Phinisi boats and speedboats are equipped with safety features to ensure a smooth journey.

Licensed Boats with Regular Maintenance

  • All boats used are officially licensed and inspected regularly.
  • Engines, fuel tanks, and electrical systems are maintained by certified marine technicians.

Life Jackets for Every Passenger

  • Available in adult and child sizes
  • Must be worn during speedboat trips or rough waters

Safety Equipment on Board
Each boat includes:

  • GPS and radio communication
  • Emergency first aid kits
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Lifebuoys

Experienced Captain & Crew

  • Our captains have years of experience navigating Komodo’s waters
  • All crew are trained in basic life support and marine safety

3. Snorkeling & Water Activity Safety

Snorkeling in Komodo is world-class — but strong currents, sun exposure, or beginner errors can pose risks. That’s why we ensure:

Briefing Before Every Snorkel Session

  • Understanding tide, depth, and safe zones
  • Proper use of mask, snorkel, and fins

Safety Boat Always on Standby

  • In case of emergency or fatigue
  • Lifeguard or crew nearby monitoring

Snorkeling Vests & Floatation Gear

  • Provided for non-swimmers or children

Some snorkeling spots have turtles or harmless reef sharks. No dangerous marine species are found near main snorkeling areas.

4. Emergency Protocols & Support

Even with perfect planning, emergencies can happen. That’s why we have a clear action plan in place.

In Case of Injury or Illness:

  • First aid is provided on board
  • For serious cases, we coordinate evacuation to Labuan Bajo clinic or hospital
  • Labuan Bajo also has an airport for emergency evacuation to Bali

Communication:

  • All boats carry marine radios and mobile communication tools
  • Our office team in Labuan Bajo is available 24/7 during all tour operations
5. Safety for Families & Special Support Needs

We welcome guests of all ages and backgrounds. For families, older travelers, or those with medical conditions, we offer:

  • Customized boat layout (child-safe cabins)
  • Flexible trekking or non-trekking options
  • Easy snorkeling spots from the beach
  • Diet and medication notes respected by crew
Before You Travel: What You Can Do to Stay Safe
  • Inform us of any medical conditions or allergies
  • Bring personal medications or EpiPens
  • Wear suitable footwear and light, sun-protective clothing
  • Listen to crew and ranger instructions at all times
